It’s been more of the same on the Upper Madison these days, with very little pressure and lots of fish to be had.  There were four cars down at Raynold’s Bridge and two cars parked at the Three Dollar entrance, so we headed down to Pine Butte and caught a pile of nice browns and rainbows on Three dollar dips and #18 BH hares ears. Once it seemed like the fish were getting wise to our presence, we drove back over to Raynolds and fished some of the deeper slicks out in the middle of the river, and they did not disappoint.  Sometimes the takes were quite subtle and other times the indicator would shoot three to four feet upstream, but all the fish were hot and put up great fights.  Long story short…IT’S BEEN REALLY GOOD AROUND HERE.

Temperatures in the Madison Valley climbed above 32 degrees over the last couple of days, and there has been relatively no wind south of Lyon’s Bridge.  I went down to Raynold’s Pass for an hour an a half hoping to get in on some dry fly action, but I think it was pretty much done by the time I arrived (around 1:30 p.m.).  With only a couple random heads up in the slicks, it seemed like nymphing was going to be the best option, and it did not disappoint.  I started with a #18 BH Olive Hares Ear trailing a #18 $3 dip and never took it off–Lots of Rainbows in the 12-17 inch range with a couple of browns thrown in the mix.  This time of year seems to be more about finding the fish then it is about specific fly patterns, so look for slower, deeper water and you should get into them.  Other patterns that should not be overlooked include #18 black and red zebra midges, #10-14 golden stones, #18 baetis nymphs, and #8-10 Pat’s Rubberlegs in brown, black, and Tan/Brown.  If you are looking for dry fly action, I would be on the river around noon and have a few #18-20 Griffiths gnats and #18 black stillborne midges in your box and you should be just fine.

Kirby: 1,210 cfs

We’ve been blessed with a lot of snow over the past week, and our snow pack is currently holding at 124% in the Madison Range…..Hopefully it keeps on dumping and we’ll have plenty of water for the upcoming season.  Water temps are hovering around 35 degrees Between the Lakes and 35-37 degrees at the Kirby Gauge…not the best conditions for pitching streamers, but we’re still getting a few on olive peanut envys, black tips up, and white silk kitties if you are still looking for a tug (and as stubborn as we are).  Fishing has been good with nymphs in the wade section, and you can expect to do well on eggs, baetis nymphs, Rubber legs, and midge larva/pupa around Raynolds and Three Dollar Bridge this time of year.  The afternoons can also be a good time to find fish up eating midges, and a well presented stillborne midge or griffiths gnat is usually all you need to get some top water action.  As always, please watch out for spawning redds when fishing this time of year, and make sure to check the forecast before heading over here as they are calling for gusts up to 40mph today.
