Fishing Report for June 22nd, 2012

Madison River

Dam:  1,250 cfs

Kirby: 1,640 cfs

Varney: 2,320 cfs

The Upper Madison is fishing good these days, and we are holding at ideal water levels for both wade and float fishing.  Fishing in the wade section has been especially good over the last week, and anglers have been doing best on a combination of caddis larva/pupa, stonefly nymphs, midges, and caddis dries.  The float section below Lyons has been good most mornings, but afternoons have been day to day…but I guess that is fishing in a nutshell.  When the wind has cooperated, we’ve had some pretty good caddis days fishing #14-16 x-caddis and other emergent imitations, and we’re even starting to see a few yellow sallies popping below Palisades.  As far as the Big Bugs are concerned, we are getting more reports of salmon flies below Varney and it shouldn’t be long before we start to see them moving up river.  Streamer fishing has been good early and late, but really inconsistent during the day, which is normal when we start to get the first mass exodus of bugs throughout the river.

Fishing Report for June 15th, 2012

Madison River

Dam: 1,500 cfs

Kirby: 1,960 cfs

Varney: 2,730 cfs

The flow out of Hebgen has dropped 600 cfs over the last three days, and all the creeks are running clear…looks like run off is just about over around these here parts, and we’re stilling holding at around 3.5 feet of visibility.  We had a great nymph bite a couple days ago, but the third drop in the water seemed to throw it off yesterday, as fish were probably more concerned about finding new homes than they were about eating.  That being said, we will probably be holding at around 1,500 cfs for a little while and the fishing should pick up again once we have consistent flows return to the river.  As far as bugs are concerned, the Great Grey Spotted Sedges are starting to pop in full force as are the #18-20 black caddis… You’ll still see a few baetis popping in the afternoon, but they are on their way out.  The rubberleg bite is still day to day, but we’ve been doing very well on caddis larva and pupa imitations throughout the Upper River, and small baetis nymphs and midges have been solid in the mornings.  We’ve also been getting a lot of calls in regards to salmon flies lately (When? Where? etc), and by the numbers of nymphs stacked up along the banks in the float section it should be any day now around Varney.  Streamer fishing continues to be good in the wade section (yesterday being the exception), and sex dungeons, barely legals, and double screamers seem to be doing the most damage

Fishing Report for June 13th, 2012

Madison River

Dam: 1,770 cfs

Kirby: 2,280 cfs

Varney: 3,000 cfs

The Upper Madison is looking good these days, and we’re currently holding at around 3.5 feet of visibility.  Despite the improved clarity, it sounds like the fishing has been a little inconsistent over the last few days, and the fish seem to want different bugs from spot to spot.  The rubber leg bite has slowed down quite a bit, but we are still picking up some nice browns on them around the faster seams.  Otherwise it has been mostly caddis larva/pupa that have been doing the most damage, with baetis nymphs and midges behind that.  Speaking of caddis, we are starting to see more and more of the Great Grey Spotted Sedges (#10 chocolate caddis) hatching these days, and it shouldn’t be long before most of our smaller hydropsyches begin to pop as well.  Streamer fishing has been good throughout the day, but the evening bite has been excellent on olive and black sculpin imitations throughout the wade section.
